| Take advantage of this amazing opportunity to work in a 17th century chapel under the guidance of some of the best conservators in Eastern Europe. The fee for this workshop has been reduced to just $360 per person per week. Registration for this spectacular workshop closes June 30, 2006, so don’t delay – sign up today!
Join us at the Manor House in Oplotnica, Slovenia to
conserve decorative artwork created in the 17th century by Carthusian
monks. Take this opportunity to re-visit the year 1631 when
the chapel, with painted decorative stucco, was consecrated.
Participants will work under the guidance of Slovenian conservators
on several tasks:
- Assess decoratively painted stucco detailing in the chapel
to determine the number of layers added to the original and
to determine the original forms that may have been altered
by subsequent layers;
- Remove newer layers of painted stucco and restore missing
stucco;
- Test stone entrance and walls of hallway for decorative
painting.
The scope of work may be expanded depending on the results of
testing. The potential for unexpected findings promises to create
an exciting project. Oplotnica
is a lovely small town located in northeast Slovenia 34 km (21 miles) from the region’s capital
city of Maribor. Workshop participants can fly into the international
airport at Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, and travel by train
or bus to Maribor. International train and bus connections are
available through Maribor. By train, Salzburg is about five
hours away, Trieste four hours, Vienna six hours and Zagreb
two hours. Maribor is surrounded by vineyard covered hills with scenic
roads, great for cycling, leading to wine shops and tourist
farms. The city itself is a university city with a rich collection
of historic architecture and is known as a wellness and spa
center.
The workshop will run for a total of one month divided into
two two-week session. Participants may register for one up to
four weeks. The cost is US$360 per week, US$720 if attending
for two weeks, which covers lodging, breakfast and lunch (dinners
are not included), insurance, workshop materials and instruction.
Transportation to Slovenia is not included and is the responsibility
of the participant; transportation from Maribor to Oplotnica
will be provided by workshop organizers. There is a discount
for registering by June 1, 2006. Instruction will be in Slovenian and English.
Workshop participants will be housed in a restored 250 year-old
farmhouse within walking distance of the work site and may check
in on Sunday of the week they are attending. (Saturday nights,
August 5, 12, and 19, 2006, are not covered unless the participant
is attending for consecutive weeks.) Participants will gather
at the Manor House Sunday at 5p.m. for an orientation followed
by dinner together in town. Work hours at the site are generally
Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. Lunches will be provided
at the site. Evenings and the weekend are free for exploring
the area, and there will be several fieldtrips planned for the
group. Additional details will be provided upon registration.
The average daytime high during the summer is in the low 80s
F (26 C) and can be as high as 95 F (35 C). There are
occasional significant downpours. Please bring clothing that
is suitable for the weather that will also be protective while
working. Please be conscious that safety is an important issue
at any work site.
