HCN’s Preservation Partners
Board Member Laura L. Mitchell,
PhD
A nonprofit organization is only as good as its Board of Directors. HCN is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Laura Mitchell to HCN’s Board. Laura will be spearheading HCN’s fundraising efforts and has begun working on our behalf with great enthusiasm. As a fundraiser and strategic planner, she has contributed to the success of a number of community associations, schools, and non-profit organizations, and we are pleased to have her join us.
Laura also serves on the board of Vesper Society (San Francisco, CA), which works to protect human dignity and enhance human potential. Until 2007, she was President of the Luther Institute in Washington, DC. Prior to serving at the Luther Institute, she worked at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution. A native Californian, and currently living in Hong Kong, she earned her bachelor's degree at Pomona College and her doctorate in American history at Yale University. Welcome Laura!
Workshop Spotlight
Saving the Susan Marr House
Virginia City, Montana
July 14-18, 2008 [Note date change]
Virginia City, Montana, an intact Gold Rush-era town, serves as a living laboratory, providing an exciting opportunity to get a real feel for its history. Workshops there encourage active participation and dialogue toward developing innovations in preservation philosophy and practices. HCN has a long history of assisting the Montana Heritage Commission and the community with historic preservation. This year, workshop volunteers will focus on the Susan Marr house, which has been in a state of decay for sixty years. Work will include identifying historic features, basic field analysis and documentation, and attempts to stabilize the structure. Along the way, participants will learn about traditional building materials and techniques as they work to save this National Historic Landmark. Read more!
Connecting in Colorado
While based in Boulder, Colorado, HCN has yet to have a workshop in the Rocky Mountain State. That is about to change as we join forces with Colorado Preservation, Inc. to offer a series of weekend workshops over the next few years that build on CPI’s commitment to preserving Colorado’s history. This summer, HCN will assist CPI in bringing volunteers to work at the Como Depot, which is 10 miles from Fairplay above South Park. The Como Depot is one of the structures included in CPI's Endangered Places Program. Beginning in the summer of 2009, HCN will take the lead at a workshop tentatively planned to take place in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado. Complete details will be provided in the May issue of Update.
