RESTORING BUILDINGS, RENEWING COMMUNITIES

NAMES, NAMES, AND NAMES

As you peruse your atlas or travel the world, you will inevitably find that two cities in the same country or on opposite sides of the world share the same name. Is this due to the search for a glamorous image or just a well-loved name?

In Syria, there are two "Banias”; both Lebanon and Libya have a Tripoli; and in Egypt and Illinois (yes, in Illinois) you will find Cairo. It is the lesser known Cairo in Illinois that you should think about visiting next summer.

The Adventures in Preservation workshop Saving "Shotguns" - Building A Better Future in Cairo (June 13-26, 2010) is an invitation to travel to Illinois to learn about shotgun-style houses and lend a hand in saving one. You’ll be boosting historic preservation efforts in the historic town and helping create affordable housing.

And while you're there, you might visit Paris - that is Paris, Illinois.
