
SIMON HERBERT
ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVATOR
Simon Herbert is Director of the Arkansas Institute for Building Preservation
Trades located at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas
in Helena, Arkansas. His involvement in historic preservation work began
as assistant head carpenter on a restoration project in the Hudson Valley,
New York during the early 1980's. He later gained experience as an architectural
conservator, preservation carpenter, and project and site manager for
preservation projects.
Simon holds a BA degree in Industrial Design from Ravensbourne College
of Art in Kent, England and a Master of Science in Historic Preservation
from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1994, he joined the faculty
of the Building Preservation and Restoration program at Belmont Technical
College, Ohio as Associate Professor and co-directed the program until
joining the AIBPT in the spring of 2000. As director, Simon instructs
students in a strongly practical curriculum of building preservation
classes, and leads a series of popular preservation workshops held in
Arkansas, Mississippi and Oklahoma.
He is a native of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands located
off the French coast in the English Channel.
